Merrimac Community School received a Wisconsin Recycling Excellence Award from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The school was one of 21 organizations to be recognzied with this the award.
Congratulations to the students and staff at MCS! Thank you for your recycling and waste minimization efforts!
The school uses chickens to reduce its food waste from snack and lunch times. Vegetable peelings, uneaten salad bar items, fruit and other suitable foods are sent to the chicken pen instead of the landfill. In the mornings, students feed the chickens as a part of the care and responsibility routine.
This innovative program is not only reducing waste but educating the next generation of Wisconsinites about waste diversion.
